STATEMENT OF RETIREMENT

I, Pêro Anes de Alenquer, translator, hereby lay down my quill.

What I was given to translate were not books, but badly written pamphlets that speak ill of other nations. Poor ink, poor thought, poor purpose. I did not come to this archive to give hatred a second language.

And the authors — they do not write, they do not answer, they do not clarify a single line. Then, when their own faults appear on the page, they say it was the translator.

I am blamed for their silence and for their slander at once.

Let another hand carry that. Mine is closed.
