“Stop that fox!” He waved to the other soldiers. “That’s the pup we’re looking for, you lazy furbags!”

West sprinted faster, picturing the Bruin gearblades cleaving his shoulders like a harvest chicken. He dodged through the shrubs and trees, ears flicking back and forth, scanning for other soldiers. West dove for cover - the ear-piercing shriek of gearblades spinning past him. He crawled to the right behind a tin-framed barn, then stood and sprinted around to the front, diving into a pile of rotting straw and old manure. The bears lugged along behind. They clunked and thunked past West’s hiding place and off down a game trail headed into the ravine. They stopped at the edge of the creek, searching up and down the stream, confused and frustrated. The larger one let out an ear-splitting, savage roar.

West gagged as he waited under the foul-smelling, itchy haystack all afternoon until he was positive the bears had moved on. Even then, he was extra careful on his way back to Dandelion’s cottage. He took the long way and hid in the woods at the slightest sound.

“Where were you today?” said an angry voice. West ducked, a paw whizzing over the back of his head. “I know you skipped out on class again! You didn’t go back there, did you?” asked his aunt - a lop-eared jill-rabbit.

“You can be mad at me later! They burned down my house! It’s gone and-” The fox’s voice caught in his throat. “And then some crazy Bruin saw me and sent his goons after me. I managed to lose them, but I’m scared, Auntie! I heard him say they were looking for me. Why do they want me? I’m only a kid and-”

“Shh! They’ve found us! We need to leave!”
