Tides of Fire by Hilary Lester

Mermaid fantasy/adventure set in the real non-magical world

Tides of fire

Even the Wiseones cannot tell how it began or why, for countless tides, the Clanfolk have waged a bloody war beneath the ocean. The origin of their enmity is lost in the drifts of time. But, for Leelee, a young pod-cadet of the Leahtu Clan Guardians, the ancient feud will bring a beloved enemy, a desperate choice, and a terrible price to be paid.

From the stern and icy stronghold of the Kiakhu Clan to the peaceful reefs of the Leahtu, Tides of Fire follows a small band of black-tailed rebels who risk torture and death to rid the Clan of a vicious tyrant; and tells the poignant love story of Leelee, the warrior maiden who faces death at the hands of her own priests if she should give herself to Makhulu, her enemy and her love.

These merfolk have no magic, inhabit no fairytale. They are hot-blooded sea creatures full of passion and poetry, fighting for love and freedom and a chance of happiness in their mysterious under-water world.

Sample text:

Makhulu shifted slightly in the water and cautiously reached for the hilt of the dagger he wore tucked into his shark-hide belt.  It was second nature now, after long training, to use the glinting shadows of the coral bank and darting rainbows of fish to break up the outline of his form; but the approaching Leahtu warrior was, no doubt, just as well trained, and it was necessary to be prepared.

As the Leahtu drew nearer, he allowed the tension to drain from his taut muscles.  No need for the dagger, after all—it was only a kit with a little ‘phin pup clinging close to her tail.  He approved her swift, clean action as she cut through the water, her pale gold braids streaming behind her.

She was close enough now for him to glimpse the tender place where the skin beneath her navel blended seamlessly into the shot silver of her tail.  A faint blush of pink revealed that she was mature and ready to be mated.  Could she be the Leahtu he had been sent to intercept?  Unlikely, but it might be entertaining to investigate.  As the kit and her dolphin companion approached the bank, Makhulu bunched the muscles of his sleek, black tail and shot up from the shadow of the reef with a speed that brought the kit to a shuddering halt.

Author review:
Andrea is highly motivated and enthusiastic. She met agreed deadlines, and frequently communicated with me to ensure she understood the unfamiliar terms I had invented for my fantasy world. It was a great pleasure to work with her.
