The witches of riegersburg

For the fans of The DaVinci Code—with three generations of extraordinary women keeping alive the ancient Goddess faith.

“Whenever you are of need, come to Me when the moon is full and I, Hecate, Queen of all witches, will guide you, my daughter, to your heart’s desire.”

In 1665, Baroness Elisabeth von Galler is faced with the frenzy of the witch trials raging through Europe. Her son-in-law acquires dispensation from the Kaiser to hold trials in Riegerburg. As the “Faith-Keeper” of an ancient Goddess-worshipping community, can she save her loved ones from certain death and her faith from disappearing?

In 1938, Hitler takes over Austria, and Katarina Lilienthal fears for the lives of her Jewish husband and daughter. Armed with the secret Book of Shadows, her legacy passed down from Baroness von Galler, and her intuition will she be able to save her family before the horror begins?

Seventy years later, Sarah Lilienthal inherits her beloved Oma’s secret book. Katarina’s deathbed wish is for Sarah to travel to Austria—the place Sarah’s grandparents barely escaped with their lives on the verge of WWII—and make amends with Oma’s estranged family. Sarah is cast on a quest to find her true self and the origins of the book by traveling to Riegersburg, where the Book of Shadows’ journey began.

Chapter 2

June 1665

Riegersburg Castle, Austria

It was a grey morning and raining heavily outside the fortress. Pelting hard staccato sounds pummeled against the leaden glass panes. Elisabeth paced back and forth in her spacious bedchamber. Her four-posted bed with its gold and red brocade canopy was still unmade. On the floor, intricate handwoven rugs covered the cold wooden boards. A long, slender table covered with a pearl-colored damask cloth stood in the middle of the room. An opened bottle of wine, two golden cups and a plate of half-eaten bread and cheeses were on it.

Katarina sat on a small bench next to the fireplace where Elisabeth’s coat of arms hung above. A pair of doves and two crossed swords painted in red, white and silver were born in the crest.  The fire crackled, warming the room and a hint of burned candle wax and smoke tickled Elisabeth’s nose.

“They’ll need someone to blame for this relentless foul weather,” Elisabeth said stopping to look out of the window. She placed her hands on either side of the jamb.  “The crops are ruined. People will starve this winter; they’ll look to evil doings.” She pressed her forehead against the window then turned to Katarina, worried.

Katarina said, “Milady, the people of Riegersburg like you well and cannot be such as those in Linz. Your generosity is well known.”

Elisabeth turned to Katarina and smiled. “After all these years, you still call me your lady.”
