“You are in so much trouble, young man,” said an angry voice. Ridge stepped into the little log cabin to find his mother with her arms folded and an angry expression on her face.
“What? Why?” he answered.
“You were supposed to help your grandpa turn out the cattle today. Where were you?” She turned away from him and continued stirring the soup in the large black pot on the fire.
“I just went for a walk. Smells great in here!” He tried to change the subject.
“You were up on the cliff again, weren’t you?”
“No,” he lied.
“You are a terrible liar. I could see the top of your cowboy hat from here!”
“Oh,” he said, realizing he was caught lying for the second time this week.
“You aren’t allowed up there. You might think you are some big tough cowboy, son, but you are eleven and need to mind my rules.”
“You never let me go anywhere!” Ridge whined.
“Richard. I am definitely going to let you go somewhere today.”
“You are?” he asked cautiously, knowing it was never good when she used his full name.
“You bet. You are going to go help your grandfather get firewood. You can find him on the other side of the creek.”
