Book Excerpt
'Hello?'

'Hello Katherine.' A man's voice. Deep, cultivated, refined.

'Hmm, yes, this is Katherine. Who is this?'

She took another deep pull on her cigarette and found herself turning her head to exhale. She did not want the caller to know she was smoking.

'My name is not important.' said the voice. 'There may come a time when I choose to share that information, but until then, Katherine, our conversations will be about you, not me.'

Katherine was confused. Her mind raced. Was this a joke? Some weird sales pitch? Or had she just answered the phone to some perverted nut? Was she being harassed right now, right here in her own kitchen?

Her impulse was to hang up, not say another word and just press the red end-call button. Yet that voice, deep, rich, it's rhythm and cadence almost hypnotic.

Sample text:

Katherine was in the kitchen washing breakfast dishes when the phone rang. It had been left on the coffee table in the lounge the night before, so by the time she dried her hands and walked through to answer, the ringing had already stopped. She looked at the missed call notification and frowned. Number withheld, it read.

'Damn cold callers,' she thought, 'go sell your insurance to someone else.'

She slipped the phone into the back pocket of her jeans and looked around the room. It was neat enough, she thought, might need some dusting done later but for now, it would do. Besides, she did not expect company and her husband Sam would be at the office all day.

'Coffee,' she said aloud to herself and returned to the kitchen.

Katherine slipped a filter into the top of the percolator, spooned in freshly ground coffee beans and switched the machine on. She went to a large, solid oak cabinet that stood in a corner of the kitchen, opened a draw and pulled out a half empty pack of cigarettes and a cheap plastic lighter she kept hidden under some neatly folded tea towels. Sam disapproved of her smoking habit and she never smoked when they were out together in public or when he was with her in the house. She was sure Sam was aware she smoked when she was alone, but he never spoke to her about it. Sam could be totally cool about things that annoyed or irritated him. It was a trait Katherine admired in him and one of the many reasons she loved him so much, she thought.
