Sample text:

Marquis asks me at least once a week now to tell him the story of how I knew Giovanni. I wonder if he actually thinks he can get it out of me like that, asking such a simple question. Maybe he really is so innocent. If only I could give such a simple, innocent answer. I adore Marquis, so I feel bad about it, but I give him the same response that I give everybody else. It's not that I don't want to tell them. It's not about them at all. It's about me. I absolutely hate to use the phrase ‘I can’t’, so I won’t. But I haven’t talked about it ever, for good reason. Just like I don't talk about most things in my past I guess. That's always been my life. This story is a little different from the rest though. The rest of my past I keep to myself because I’m just naturally averse to talking about anything that makes me feel anything. But for this particular period of my life, there’s also some potentially dire consequences attached to a few of its not so minor details. And the rest I won't be able to bring myself to think about without having an emotional meltdown. Which I strongly prefer to opt out of. So I’ve thought hard about stripping away all of the identifying information, all of the substance, telling a naked skeleton of a story. For the sake of my own sanity and everyone else’s. But I’ve learned throughout my life that when you leave out so many details, you turn that thing that you're trying so hard to share, that part of you that you so deeply wish that others could even just get the smallest glimpse of, into something that is completely inauthentic and devoid of all meaning. A story that connects to no one. Not even to you. So after all of the effort and all of the agony of trying to tell it and alter it and omit details and keep telling it, all at the same time, there ends up being no truth shared and no understanding gained.
