In the beginning God created the entire universe and all that it contains by simply speaking them into existence. But it is interesting to note that when He was ready to create man, He became more personally involved, making the creation of man very unique and special. He said in Genesis 1, verse 26, "Let us make man in our likeness..." revealing at this time that He was not alone in this great plan. Through study of the scriptures, we find that God is three....God, the Father, God the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit. This revelation of God, which is portrayed throughout scripture, lets us know that He is a Trinity, a trichotomy. Since we are made in the likeness of God, in His image, we are also a trichotomy, made up of three parts.

We find these three parts of man spoken of repeatedly in the Word of God as body, soul, and spirit. At the time of creation, God made man's body from "the dust of the earth" (Gen. 2:7). Then He breathed into this lifeless form "the breath of life" and he "became a living being", receiving at this time a soul and a spirit. We were not just spoken into existence as the rest of His creation. We were God-breathed into existence!

Our bodies are just "earth suits" to house our spirit and soul. Our spirit and soul live inside this "earth suit". Another way of saying this is that we are jars of clay... "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us". We find this in 2 Cor. 4:7. Our bodies can become a showcase for these great treasures as we allow God to direct us and change us.

Our soul, is that part of us that God created to give us a free will, free to choose right or wrong. Our soul is our personality, our mind, our will, our emotions.
