Introduction

At 6’2” and 155 pounds soaking wet and with bricks in my pockets, one would certainly think I was perfectly healthy. For most of my life, I believed being skinny was the sign of a healthy body. In reality, I was the furthest from being the poster boy for good health. I could easily conceal my miniature beer belly under a baggy t-shirt, squeeze into jeans with a 32” waist, function in daily life without breaking much of a sweat and eat anything that wouldn’t bite back.

However, I was never happy with my buggy-whip arms, chicken legs, and gradual increase in my waistline. Though I outwardly exuded confidence, inwardly I felt ashamed of my appearance and lifestyle. Every day, I ate junk food, drank alcohol and smoked pot like a crazed fraternity pledge on Spring Break, and lived with the questionable motto of

At least I’ll die with a smile on my face.

Years of working in the healthcare industry exposed me to the end result of poor lifestyle choices. In every case, the people who died from a lifetime of unhealthy decisions never had a smile on their face. Usually, they died slow, agonizing deaths due to debilitating chronic conditions caused by preventable diseases such as Type II Diabetes, heart failure and stroke. In order to maintain a tolerable quality of life, these less fortunate people had to function on a cocktail of medications and restricted diets, all because they didn’t take earlier precautions. I was on that same road for quite some time and ignoring the evidence wasn’t doing me any good. If I continued on the path I was on, then my life certainly would not end well.
