When you read, you engage your senses. These include your eyes, ears and mouth. More importantly, reading involves your brain. That said, you may be interested to know that efficient readers utilize only the eyes and the brain. Conversely, a poor reader makes use of his eyes, brain, and also his ears and mouth. In other words, speed reading entails utilizing less physical senses while increasing the involvement of the brain.
Speed reading has a lot to do with seeing. Obviously, the first step to reading is to see the words. Even so, the speed in which you read relies greatly on the style in which you see the words on the page. Before the 1920’s, people believed that reading meant moving their eyes from the left side of the page and all the way across to the right. They see each word. They read each word. They digest each word. When you have to see, sound out, and try to understand all the words every single time, reading takes thrice as long.
However, today, we’ve established that unless you are a beginner, you already possess the ability to read more than a single word at one time. Yes, your eyes move from the left and across towards the page to the right, but it doesn’t do so in a straight and steady line.
