Sample text:

On a standard paged book, about 40-60% of words written are neither important nor critical. If you were to delete these words, you would still figure out the context of the book or page. If you can figure out the keywords in your book, you can skip reading unnecessary words, leaving your mind to fill the gaps.

For instance, if you consider a sentence such as “I came home late yesterday because I had a lot of work to do at the office,” you can read the keywords, and it would be like “came __ late __ yesterday __ a lot of work __office.”

Reading in this manner saves you up to 50% of the time you use reading. Practicing this technique can even lead to reading lesser words and improve your reading speed.

Schedule Some Breaks

Reading at a steady pace for a number of hours straight is far less efficient than taking 5 minute breaks after every hour of reading if you are going that long. Set a timer to engage in an hour of speed-reading at full concentration, and then go for a break when the timer sets off. Reward yourself during the short break then continue with the book.

Set A Time Goal

Depending on how long your book is, set a time length you want to have finished it, or to reach a specific page within a certain amount of minutes. To begin, set a goal of achieving 250 words per minute. If your reading speed is above average, set a goal of reading about 17 pages in ten minutes. When you set this goal, start speed-reading. Stick to your goal and push yourself to achieve it.
