Using a crock pot requires safety measures, just like any other kitchen equipment or appliance. Below are some of the guidelines one needs to follow in order to ensure safety in using a slow cooker.

It is important to assemble the parts before anyone can use a crock pot. The crock or the stoneware goes inside the heater housing and the lid on top of the crock.

As for the temperature, it might vary from meal to meal, and so users should refer to their specific recipes in order to know what setting they would have to use. If the unit has a “warm” option in the settings, remember that it is only to keep an already cooked food warm. It is not suitable for preparing raw ingredients, and is not recommended to use for more than four hours.

If the crock pot is new, wash it first before using, after taking the unit out of the box. (For methods on how to wash a crock pot, refer to the succeeding safety measures.)

Do not overfill the stoneware. Water or liquid spillage might ruin the unit, so never fill a crock pot with water or any other cooking liquid (like wine or broth) more than ¾ the measurement of its depth.

Always cook with the lid on, especially during the first two hours of cook time. This will allow the heat to build around the crock pot properly, and will therefore ensure that the dish is cooked well all throughout and not raw on the inside, especially when roasting chicken or preparing big chunks of meat.

Remember to always turn off the unit and unplug the electrical cord after use and before washing to prevent causing fire. The same dangers of leaving electrical appliances plugged and unattended apply to this kitchen appliance
