PROLOGUE

The antiquated billboard was scheduled to be replaced within a month’s time.  It stood fourteen feet tall and approximately forty feet wide.  Most of the lights belonging to it that illuminated past advertisements had long been burnt out.  A marketing conglomerate had purchased the structure along with the parcel underneath it near an expressway.  The acquisition gave them a territorial advantage throughout the Midwest.

There was only one use until the renovations for a new more modern digital system could be installed.  A lone figure balanced on the platform above and stared through the scope mounted on his Dragunov sniper rifle.  Tobias Reed had purchased it from a collector in Fort Worth Texas after months of monetary courting online.

He checked his watch again before steadying lethal aim down the barrel.  It was a perfect morning without humidity and a light breeze.  His intended target got out of a new dark colored BMW at a corner gas station parking lot about three hundred yards away from his position.  The man in his early forties emerged less than five minutes later with a cup of hot coffee in one hand and a prepackaged pastry in the other.  Steam escaped from an opening in the lid and was easily visible from his perch.  Tobias squeezed the trigger ever slowly until he felt the powerful recoil.

Screams echoed near his victim shortly after the lead projectile had found its mark.  The urban sniper descended to the ground where his vehicle had been parked near a side street.  His pulse never rose above a moderate resting rate.
