Reign of the Buffalo by Nathan Jay

Book One

A child receives a gift from his Grandmother that changes the way he sees the world.

Reign of the buffalo

During the summer months, most parents living in large cities send their kids to camps or summer school. Not Wilson’s parents. For some strange reason, every summer, they send him and his little brother down South to spend time with their Grandmother, an elderly Native American woman living in a small house on the edge of a small town. No one has ever told Wilson the reason his parents continuously send the two boys there. The only thing Wilson knows is that while he's there he's forced to take care of his 100-year-old Great Grandmother. She’s a strange woman that refuses to interact with the public and spends all her days sitting alone, staring into the dark forest at the edge of the backyard. One day when Wilson’s Great Grandmother dies, she leaves him a terrifying gift; one that’s so powerful it alters the way he views the world – and the way the world views him. There are some things parents shouldn't hide from their children.

“This will startle you. Prepare yourself.”

She moved close to Wilson and wrapped her arm around his shoulders.

“Use your fingers and tap your eyelid twice. Next, look out towards the forest.”

Nervously, Wilson raised his fingers to his eye and tapped just as instructed.

Suddenly a red demonic creature with two heads banged against the window. It clawed against the glass with its long knifelike nails. Its glowing yellow eyes widened as it saw Wilson. Suddenly one of its heads let out a scream and bit into the neck of the other creature, severing its head from the body. Black blood sprayed from the beast's neck, causing the monster's whole body to stumble backward. As soon as the body touched the ground, hundreds of black vultures with burning wings of fire lit up the sky. The birds descended on the beast, ripping chunks of flesh from its bones with their razor-sharp beaks and talons.

Wilson clung to his Grandmother, a small whimper escaping his lips. He watched as hundreds of wild dogs covered in blood came from everywhere. They attacked the birds as they feasted on the corpse of the demon. Their deep barks were unlike anything Wilson ever heard in his life. Suddenly all the animals scattered. Wilson looked up in the sky as a giant lizard-like foot came crashing down on the corpse of the demon. Next, hundreds of black lizards started falling from the sky, wriggling on the ground and snapping their hungry jaws, searching for food.

“Please, Grandma. Make it stop,” cried Wilson. He couldn’t take the sight anymore. It seemed like the hellish world would crash through the window at any minute.

“Tap your eyelid again, and it’ll stop.”
