BIG GAME
The forest is so quiet I can hear the animal breathing. I watch the snout twitch through my scope, sucking in air, trying to reconcile my scent with its internal list of threats and predators.

‘I don’t have a clear shot. Take it out.’
The message from Charles rolls silently across the AR display.
Fucking hell.

I close one eye, breathe and squeeze the trigger. Before I can process it, the bullet tears through the boar’s temple, and the beast collapses. The sound of crumpled vegetation beneath its limp body is deafening in the silent forest. Deafening until Charles starts shouting in my earpiece.
“How do you feel, Scott? How do you fucking feel after your first kill, my man?”
“Yeah …” I exhale a long-held breath. “It was a decent shot. I feel good.”
A fist flies into the shoulder of my armoured vest, almost knocking me to the ground. “Good?! Is that it?”
I right myself, turn to face Charles, towering a full head over me. Shrug. “I told you … I don’t even know if this is my scene, man.”
“Bollocks! It’s everyone’s scene once they’re in the right headspace. Wait till we’re roasting this hairy fucker over the fire with the other boys. You’ll feel like a real man for the first time in your life.” He strides toward my kill and beckons for me to follow. Grasping the carcass, he tries to
roll it. Can’t. “Come on, then. Lend me a hand.”
I crouch on the other side of the body and force my hands under its bulk. Boggy water soaks through my gloves, sending chills into me, adding to the collection. I find purchase, and we lift, folding the legs underneath.

The quality of the actual translation work was good, but there were some inconsistencies of formatting, titles, etc, which meant that there was a lot of work to be done after the translation was complete.
