“Keep it down out there!” Lulu hissed at her accomplice, Riley, pressing an ear against the cool steel wall of the safe behind the bar.  The small safe had been hidden behind a painting of the king looking slightly constipated, but it hadn't taken Lulu long to find it. She had two more numbers to suss out in the combination and Riley was not helping.

The rest of the inn’s barroom was being reduced to shambles as the tall brunette conducted her search with all the subtlety of a hurricane.  Tables were overturned, bottles scattered across the hard wooden floor, and the tapestries hung lopsided from their pegs.

“Calm down,” Riley said as she appraised an expensive-looking vase. She grinned back at Lulu, her partner in crime.  “That sleeping potion knocked everyone on their asses.  Honestly, with the amount these folks drink, they’d be unconscious even if we hadn’t spiked the barrels.”  She threw the vase over her shoulder, shattering it on a bar stool.

Lulu raised an immaculate blond eyebrow at her.

“Cheap knockoff,” Riley said.  She pried a small gem out of the casing of a nearby clock.  “Between this haul and the huge payout from the next job, we’ll definitely have enough to save the academy.  Madame Marm might even crack a smile.  There’s nothing to worry-”

“What in the unholy abyss is going on here?” A voice rang out from high on the stairwell above them. Footsteps and voices from the top of the stairs announced they were about to have company.

Monks! Riley cursed herself for forgetting.  We always forget to drug the damn sober monks!

“Riley, would you be a dear?” Lulu pointed to the growing gaggle of monks assembling on the stairwell.  “I’m down to the last number.  Won’t be a minute.”
