Sample text:

The origin of the term “narcissism” comes from the classical Greek myth of Narcissus, a man who became so infatuated with his own reflection that he died of grief after realizing he would never love someone else so much as he loved himself. The term has since been used to describe anyone who is particularly egotistical or vain. However, it was not until 1968 that narcissistic personality disorder was identified as a legitimate personality disorder.

It is estimated that approximately 1% of the population has some form of narcissistic personality disorder and it is slightly more common in men than it is in women.

According to Sigmund Freud, a certain degree of narcissism is a perfectly normal part of the human mind. It is this sense of love for oneself that drives our instinct for survival. In his theories of human development, Freud argues that between the ages of 2 and 4, as the child begins to develop a sense of self or an “ego,” narcissism is a perfectly normal phenomenon.

Prior to this age, when the child is still an infant, it lacks a sense of self. That is, it lacks the ability to distinguish itself from the rest of the world; it has no ego. So when it begins to understand that there is a difference between self and everything else (around the age of 2), the child will behave in a characteristically narcissistic way.
