many people who have innately narcissistic tendencies. Whether or not they grow up to become a narcissist depends on their own individual life experiences.

Sigmund Freud’s original work covering this topic, called On Narcissism, said that when we are infants, we go through a developmental stage where we innately believe that our needs and our feelings are the most important thing in the world. This is due to a psychological inability to separate from our caregiver yet - we see them as an extension of ourselves at this very early point in our lives.

However, as time goes on, we usually learn to trust our caregivers to take care of us as necessary, even though they have an identity of our own. This leads us to accept ourselves and acknowledge the needs and value of others in our lives. However, narcissism will develop when we cannot move past this stage.

Harry Boyd’s 1986 study, Love vs. Omnipotence, discusses this development. We must learn that we need to work with others in order to survive. There are many reasons why we might not learn this important truth and develop narcissistic personality tendencies.
