Finally, at 9:00AM Silja wandered into the kitchen, wearing a pair of Fiona’s grey sweats. Her golden brunette hair was bed tossed and she still looked pallid from last night’s bad experience, but she managed a sleepy smile, and asked, “Coffee?”

“Good morning! Did you manage to sleep?” Fiona asked.

“Between the pounding in my head and all the noise coming from the attic, I didn’t do too badly. I managed to drift off. What’s all the racket in the attic?”

Fiona hesitated. “Um…prob’ly the furnace. How are you feeling?”

“Better, the pounding has calmed to a dull thump, so that’s good, I suppose. No Detective Landry yet?”

Looking down at her robe while brushing back her tousled hair, Fiona said, “I wouldn’t think he’d show up this early, would you?”

Silja chuckled at Fiona’s panicked reaction. “Don’t worry, you look cute as a button in your jammies, but no, I don’t think he’d come this early. Are the police still outside?”

Fiona sat a mug of coffee in front of Silja. “The changing of the guard happened about an hour ago—shift change, I’m guessing. I don’t think they’d be too happy if they saw how rickety my basement door is—anyone could get through it.”

Silja shot her a wary look.
