The best way of describing mindfulness is “being in the moment.” That means very little to people who don’t know anything about this kind of philosophy, but what it does mean is remembering that what has past is no more and that the future is not something we can have any power over. Thus, mindful people stay in the moment and do not allow their thoughts to dredge up mistakes from the past or to worry about the future. In the next five minutes, go and make yourself a drink and while you are doing this, examine your thoughts. Don’t try not to think things, but just act as you normally do and listen to what’s happening in your mind. The chances are that you have worries about things that have not yet happened or that you make room in your mind for things that people said or did that left an impact with you. What all this amounts to is that you are not living in the moment.

 

Now try something else. Put this book down and pick up your coffee. First, smell the aroma. Hold the cup up to your nose so that you can enjoy it. Then take a taste of the coffee and let it sit on your tongue. Your taste buds are able to distinguish the flavor and you will feel the warmth of the coffee. Then swallow it. In this one moment of concentrating on what your coffee experience was like, you became mindful. Your mind was concentrating on the drink and you didn’t make room for memories to come flooding in or worries about what you have to do for the rest of the day. In that moment, you allowed your senses to take over and to enjoy the coffee you made for yourself.
