In Mindful breathing, you’ll notice a lot of similarities to Mindful relaxation. The difference here is the focus on breathing only. As in Mindful relaxation, Mindful breathing can grow as you grow in your Mindfulness practice. It may, however, take some time to make it a practice best for you. Remember to be kind to yourself throughout the learning process.

 

This exercise may also be helpful to work through with soft, soothing music.

 

To begin this exercise, find a comfortable position to sit or lay.

 

You may choose to close your eyes or leave them open.

 

Begin with several deep breaths, clearing your mind of thoughts, worries, or expectations.

 

As you breathe deeply, bring awareness to how full your lungs become. Focus on filling your lungs completely. The diaphragm begins near the end of your rib cage; allow the air to fill your chest from your diaphragm to the very top of your lungs.

Release each breath completely before moving on to the next, dispelling all of the air from the diaphragm to the very top of your lungs.

You may notice thoughts edging into your awareness. Gently push those thoughts away and focus back on your breathing. You may also notice yourself falling asleep. This is okay; gently push the sleepiness away and focus on your breathing.
