This is normally performed in the seated position. Thus, you must sit yourself down. If you are sitting on a chair, your feet should be flat on the floor and your back needs to be perfectly straight. Your hands should be placed on your lap, with your stronger hand palm facing upward supporting your other hand, palm facing upward as well. Now, touch your thumbs together. If you choose to sit on a meditation cushion, then the position will be with your back straight, your knees bent, and your ankles crossed, although your hands will be in the same position. This seating is also used for all types of seated meditation. 

The idea of the chant is to inspire you and to help you to keep the rhythm correct with your breathing. The chant we will use in this example is Om.  You should sing the word for a moment to get accustomed to hearing the sound. Keep your lips slightly apart so that you feel a slight tingle as you sing the word. It may seem a little strange when you first do this but the next thing to do is to get the rhythm of the chant right. Breathe into the count of 8, chant on the outward breath to the count of ten. Do it over and over again, but while you are doing this, the idea is that you drop other thoughts from your mind. The chant is useful for people who want to quieten their thoughts and find that it is hard to do so during a period of silence.  


There are of course other chants that you can use and if you learn how to do this in an ashram environment, you will no doubt be given a chant that is special for you. The guru who teaches these classes will give you a chant based on your date and time of birth. Om works in the same way and you don't need to try and make sense of it. It is just a chant and sung at such a pitch that you are comfortable with it.
