Did you think that counting is one way that you can improve your mind’s concentration? It is true that you can achieve a highly concentrative mind by counting. To begin, find a comfortable spot that is free from disturbances. Mentally start counting from one to any number that you are comfortable with; if you find that your mind is wandering, do not castigate yourself. Begin again and go as far as you can before your mind starts to wander. As you continue practicing, you will notice that it gets easier to go up to a higher number than previous.

Another variation to the count method is counting backwards or skipping numbers by three. For example, instead of counting from 1-100 you can count form 100-1. Once you have gotten the hang of the backward count, you can move on to skipping by three. Skipping by three is a bit advanced and you should only practice it once you have some experience under your meditation belt. Count from 1-100 and skip in sequence of three, for example 1-3-6-9-12-15-18-21. The intensity of calculating the numbers as you skip them will increase you level of concentration and help you keep the count right.

Since the counting meditation technique is very effective, you can try many variations. For this exercise, get a book, your favorite book. Go to the first page and count the words in a paragraph. Once you get the hang of this, count words in two-three-four paragraphs until you can count words in a whole page. After this, the sky is the limit, count words in a chapter.
