This is a particular effective technique for anyone who has trouble with breathing focused meditation. It has been used for centuries by followers of Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism and many other cultures and religions.

Instead of focusing the mind on your breathing, a mantra is repeated over and over again. (Some cultures do this in combination with breathing focus).

The constant chanting, either outwardly or in the mind, forces you to disconnect with external thoughts as you concentrate on the chanting.

It is believed that steady chanting of a mantra creates vibrations which allow the mind to experience greater levels of awareness.

Someone who is well practiced in this form of meditation may find the chant begins to fade and a higher consciousness takes its place.

Some traditions use prayer beads to aid them in the mantra. These are long strings of beads, usually containing 108 beads, (there are many theories as to why the number 108 is used but in my years of practice I have been unable to find a definitive answer, but all theories relate to it having a spiritual significance).

Each bead is counted once as the mantra is repeated, depending on how long your meditation lasts this can be repeated as many times as needed.
