CHAPTER 1
SUMMARY OF THE LETTERS TO TRUMP
Former President Donald Trump was indicted on March 30, 2023, by a grand jury in Manhattan, most likely for covering up his affair with an adult film star. He's the first sitting or past president of the United States to face criminal charges.

Trump is the subject of many ongoing investigations. The continual disclosures of evidence provided by the congressional committee investigating the January 6 uprising, the advancement of a Georgia state inquiry into Republican election meddling, and the seizure of records from his Florida house by the FBI on August 8, 2022.

While this is the first time a former U.S. president has been criminally charged, it is common practice in other countries to investigate, prosecute, and even imprison former leaders.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will serve a year in jail beginning in March 2021 after being convicted of corruption and influence peddling. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's long-serving prime minister, stood trial later that year on charges of corruption, bribery, and fraud committed while in office. The trial of South Africa's ex-president Jacob Zuma, who is accused of racketeering and money laundering, has been postponed for years.

At first look, it may seem like the logical choice for a democracy to pursue criminal charges against current or former high officials who have been accused of wrongdoing.
