Are leaders born or are they molded and shaped?

Some say leaders are born; others say they’re molded and shaped. I

say it’s a combination of both. I’ve worked in just about every type of

company. When I was on Wall Street, I saw instance after instance of

leaders who were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. They were

destined, by virtue, with a combination of inherited wealth, Ivy League

educations, and old-boy (and yes, old-girl) connections to become

leaders. However, you’d be amazed to learn that many of these individuals

never reached the leadership levels in their careers, even though it was

something expected, like joining a yacht club or having a cotillion at the

Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

What’s inside of a person counts the most. We’re all born with ability.

Whether it is God given or nurtured, depends upon heredity and the

environment in which we live. Yes, it is easier to rise to the title of leader

if you go to a prestigious college and get a job in a company where you

can use the connections that you made as a student or intern to move up

the ladder of success. However, this only accounts for a small percentage

of the population. Many of the newer leaders, those that are not from the

baby boomer generation, are mavericks who’ve come up with ideas that

propelled them to a leadership role at an early age.
