The Ketogenic diet was first developed by physicians back in the 1920’s as a way to treat epilepsy. Research indicates that fasting, which is the main concept behind the Ketogenic diet, has existed since at least 500 BC.  Fasting was regarded to be the main treatment for epilepsy. This can be traced back to the Hippocratic Corpus, where the imperial physician Erasistratus thought that the only treatment for epilepsy was total elimination of food and drink. With the entrance of Christianity, the Bible also similarly mentions an occurrence where Jesus restores an epileptic boy by way of fasting and praying.

Research for the treatment of epilepsy began in the early 1900’s. At that time medical health physicians attempted several different approaches including fasting and diets, medications and therapy to determine the best treatment. Fasting can rightfully be named the antecedent of the Ketogenic Diet. The initial results of fasting experiments with epileptic children were documented by French researchers, Guelpa and Marie.

However it was medical health expert, Benard Macfadden, credited with beginning the health and fitness craze in the United States, who proposed fasting as a popular treatment. According to him, appropriate diet, exercise and consistent fasting could not only maintain an individual’s well-being, it could similarly cure many ailments like diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, eye infections, paralysis, impotence, bladder, liver and kidney sicknesses. These speculations were embraced by several other medical health professionals at the time.
