The basic concept of the Ketogenic diet is to eat foods that are high in fat, adequate enough in protein and low in carbohydrates.  The Ketogenic diet has actually been around for almost 100 years. It was invented by a doctor of the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Russell Wilder, in 1924.

Back in the early 20th century, people were not so obsessed about weight loss or finding the right diet that would remove love handles. The only reason the Ketogenic diet had been invented was to treat people with epilepsy. Dr. Wilder found that if somebody had a higher level of ketone bodies in their bloodstream, then such people would be less likely to get epileptic seizures. This kind of diet puts people in what is known as a state of ketosis. This is where your brain burns away these ketone bodies instead of protein in your muscles and uses fat to gain energy instead of sugar, like glucose.

Please note that ketogenic diets are not a cure for epilepsy, but instead are considered a healthy alternative to the dozens of epileptic medications that are currently prescribed by doctors.
