You may have heard the term intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting means adding in a fast day occasionally to lose weight. The 5:2 diet is considered a diet of intermittent fasting. In the 5:2 diet, you eat normally for five days out of the week and then fast for the other two. But fasting doesn’t mean that you eat nothing. Instead, it means a drastic cut in the calories you take in and the kinds of foods you eat.
On the fasting days, you are expected to eat 25 percent of your typical daily caloric intake, or about 500 calories based on the diet of 2000 calories. Some people, including seriously overweight people and men, can go up to 600 calories on these days.
The five non-fasting days are easy: you keep eating what you typically eat. You don’t have to cut out foods, count calories, or worry that you are doing something wrong. Those five days you should eat normally. Because of this, there is no need to feel deprived during these days. You can eat what you want and what you like without worry.
It is the other two days, the fasting days, that require a little more planning. Because you will only be eating 500 calories on these days, you need to play out exactly what you are going to eat. If you plan your food well, you will not feel hungry at all. But without planning, you may find yourself going through your calories long before the day is over.
