They chose a bench a distance from the parking lot. A line of oak trees blocked the high parking lot light, so they sat in enough shadow to see the bright half-moon, and a jillion gazillion stars.

Smelling like stale mud, lake water lapped the rocks close to their feet. In restless random motion creating small, sharp black waves like a piece of chipped obsidian.

Their heads tucked backward under a wing, ducks slept both on the bank, with some floating on top of the water.

"It's so quiet and peaceful," Cynthia said. "I've only been here before in the day, when there's kids yelling, and the ducks are quacking up a storm."

"I come here sometimes just to sit and think," Tywon said.

"Oh? Think about what?"

Still holding on to her hand, he shook his head. "Not much lately. I decided I wanted to be a personal trainer, so now I'm working my plan. I stay home and study."

"You've never brought a woman here before?" Cynthia said, squeezing his hand.

"What for?" Tywon blurted out without thinking.

"Just . . . you know, to talk, like we're doing now."

Tywon felt stupid. He didn't want to tell her. "Other women never said they wanted us to get to know each other. They just wanted . . . well, you know."

"I'm sorry I'm disappointing you, then," Cynthia said, her voice dropping.
