Although she felt almost embarrassed at acting so country, Brandy enjoyed sitting on the front porch late at night with Derron.

Just swinging.

So late even Aunt June turned off the TV and fell asleep. So late even the neighborhood dogs, no longer aroused by passerby, stopped barking. So late no crackheads drove by blasting out rap bass thumps at two hundred decibels.

So late and still she could hear crickets. And the loud creaking of the ancient wood and the rusty chain.

"Don't you have any WD-40?" she asked him.

"Guilty of neglect, as charged," he said. "I'm on it tomorrow morning."

Street and front porch lights out-blazed the stars, but the moon hung serene.

Brandy enjoyed the sitting and rocking, but it got on her nerves.

They had a great dinner at The Gyro Queen Greek restaurant, then, at Brandy's insistence, returned to The Hungry Dog to listen to the poetry reading.

The poet of the week turned out to be a retired local high school math teacher who had long gray hair. He wore a tie-dyed t-shirt and Levis faded and ripped by long use, not design, and spoke in the gruff, hoarse voice of a four-pack a day smoker.

Brandy hoped he would inspire Derron to get more ambitious. According to Derron, he hadn't written any poems in over two weeks. He been busy with work, Dayna, and Brandy, and hadn't felt inspired.

Brandy realized that wouldn't get him far, but she didn't know how to tell him that didn't satisfy her.
