Hildegard von bingen

With the power of her pen she changed Christendom forever.

Hildegard von Bingen was never meant to be remembered by history. The tenth child of one of the Graf von Sponheim’s knights, she was given to Disibodenberg monastery partly out of gratitude to God, but also partly because her visions made her too odd to make a suitable wife.

When she succeeded Jutta von Sponheim as Magistra and prioress of Disibodenberg monastery she found herself unable to keep her visions secret any longer. What happened next led her to revolutionize not only monastic life for women, but the whole world too.

Meet medieval Europe’s most prolific author, the legendary Hildegard von Bingen.

Sample text:

“Come here, Hildegard,” beckoned Jutta weakly, her life fading from her. Knowing their prioress’s time to die was upon them, the sisters surrounded her death bed with candles. Praying on their knees they asked the Virgin for help.

Quietly Hildegard approached her mentor and took her hand tenderly, “I am here, ehrwürdige Mutter.”

“I do not have much time left.  God calls me to heaven.”

“Please don’t leave us yet!”

“Pray for me, then.”

“I will. We will. I swear!”

“Of that I have no doubt,” smiled Jutta weakly. “Hildegard … I want you to promise me something.”

“Anything, ehrwürdige Mutter!”

“Promise you will not give up on your music –or your visions. God has given these to you for a reason. Embrace your talents, all of them, no matter where that takes you.”

“But Mutter, what if…?” protested Hildegard.

“God will protect you,” countered Jutta.  “Trust in God and trust in what God shows you. The path in front of you feels murky and dark, like you will never again see clearly what God wants of you. But Christ Jesus is there, always at your side.  Trust in our Lord God and you will find yourself the greatest of all to take vows in Disibodenberg. Volmar –listen to him. Confide in him. He will help you.” Quietly Jutta closed her eyes and saw no more.
