Flicker of emotion

The excitement in Penny’s marriage has disappeared, and although she and Marc have two children, Marc is focused on making a living, and Penny is feeling ignored, and these feelings lead her toward Bill.

Penny always envied her friend Amber, but lost touch with her over the years.  Amber comes to visit and confesses to Penny that she had killed her own children by letting them drown.  Amber let her children drown, and then blamed it on her husband, who was drunk and didn’t remember what he did or where he was, and so was convicted of the heinous crime.  Penny didn’t believe it at first, but later, after she discovers Amber’s new beau is a sexual predator, starts to believe that what she told her is true, and goes to the cops.

Over the next few days, Amber would come over while Marc was at work and the girls were at school.  We caught up on the good old days while I drank tea and she drank coffee.

“So how many?” she asked

“How many what?” I asked.

“How many guys did you fuck while we were in high school?”

“What?” I retorted, trying not show my embarrassment at being asked such a question.  Of course, she didn’t get the hint and pressed on.

“Oh come on,” she insisted with a playful smile.  “I bet I can beat you.”

I already knew she could.   I had only slept with one person in high school, and now I was married to that man.  Of course, I had to lie; I didn’t want Amber to think I had been a one-man woman all those years ago.  “Two,” I blurted out suddenly.

“Wow.  Does Marc know?”  She laughed, giving me a playful tap on the shoulder.  “Well I got you beat.  I fucked ten guys while we were in high school, and all the while I was dating Trent.”

I remembered that Amber had always been a flirt and a tease.  During a football game once, she had gone to the bathroom and didn’t return until it was over.  At the time, I thought she had eaten something that didn’t settle well in her stomach.  It turned out she was screwing Eric Ways.  Eric was a nerd who spent most of his days playing video games and inventing things in his parents’ basement.
