Seeing them also reminded her of the real reason why they were there, and her heart picked up pace.  In the middle of all the chaos that had ensued in the past ten minutes, she had completely forgotten about warming the dinner.

“Dad!  Mom!  So glad you could make it.  Come on in,” Vanessa gushed, trying to sound as cheerful as she could.

“For a second there, I thought you had changed your mind.  What took you so long?” Mr. Pharris remarked as he pulled Vanessa in for a hug.

“Oh, sorry about that, I was uh…doing something,” Vanessa replied.

“Ah, don’t worry about it dear,” her father said.  “It’s been a while since we saw you, we miss you, you know?  You don’t visit anymore and you hardly call.  We’re just happy to see you.”

“Oh, I missed you too Dad,” said Vanessa, hugging him tighter.

“So what about me, you don’t miss me?” her mom asked.

“Oh Mom, of course I miss you too,” she said, turning to hug Mrs. Pharris.  “No need for you to sulk, I love and miss you both, okay.”

“I know sweetie, just pulling your leg,” her mother replied laughingly.

“So how’s my favorite daughter been doing?” Mr. Pharris boomed, in that jovial, hearty way of his.

“Dad, you only have one daughter!” Vanessa quickly reminded him.

“And she’s my favorite!  What did I say wrong?” he chuckled.

This time Vanessa gave a genuine smile, basking in the love and warmth of two of the persons in her life that rarely ever made her sad.  The other person was David, and she couldn’t wait for him to arrive, despite all that was still up in the air.
