Dragons Don't Eat Meat by Kim McDougall

What would you do if you found a baby dragon?

Dragons don't eat meat

Someone is killing dragons. And the killings point to a civil war brewing among the fae. When Kyra finds an abandoned baby dragon, she doesn’t want to bring him home. But until she can hunt down his thunder and stop the dragon killers, she’s on babysitting duty.

As a pest controller with a soft heart, Kyra already has an apartment full of rescues, including a basilisk who thinks he’s a turkey, a banshee nanny, and even a pygmy kraken. She might take care of them, but they fill her need for family. And when that family is threatened, she’ll risk everything to save them. She’ll even join forces with the handsome and irritating captain of the city’s vigilante Guardians, who never fails to be around at her most undignified moments.

With this team of misfits, Kyra leaves the safety of Montreal Ward and travels through the Inbetween—the land beyond the protected city states, where magic is the only rule of law—to reunite the lost dragon with his thunder and stop a new and sinister force from invading their home.

Fans of Kate Daniels and Fantastic Beasts will find something to love in this action-packed, Urban Fantasy tale set in a future version of Montreal. Book 1 of the thrilling new Valkyrie Bestiary series is a true menagerie of quirky characters, adorable critters and dark magics.

After a long day chasing pookas, moon-frogs and one particularly stealthy gremlin, all I wanted was a cup of tea and a hot bath. Not necessarily in that order. I sniffed myself. The bath would definitely come first. The gremlin had rolled in garbage to mask his scent. But he was Hub’s problem now. That was the best part about taking commissions from the city. I was only responsible for trapping the nuisance critters, not re-homing them.

I pulled up to a storefront that had once been a mechanic’s shop. A hand-painted sign over the office door proclaimed “Valkyrie Pest Control.” The space was all mine and I was duly proud of it. I’d worked hard, building the business up from a part-time job I’d done mostly as favors to friends. I’d always had an affinity for animals. Bugs didn’t faze me and when the fae came to town, it turned out they didn’t daunt me either.

Too tired to unpack, I left my gear in the truck. A quick peek at the moon-frog caught on my last job showed the critter happily chewing the bars of his cage. About the size of a cantaloupe, he had bumpy, blue-green skin, big eyes and a wide mouth. Moon-frogs are voracious eaters with mildly acidic saliva. They can cause damage similar to termites, if termites were the size of rabbits. During most of the month, they’re sluggish and easily caught. But when the full moon hits, the critter puffs up like a balloon covered in needle-sharp thorns that release a powerful hallucinogen. Nasty and dangerous but good for a quick high, they were hunted to near-extinction in the sixties. I hoped the cage would contain him for the night.

Thankfully, my apartment took up the back half of my office. I wouldn’t have to haul my aching bones far before I could peel off my jeans and drop into a hot bath.
