Several young couples had already stopped off from riding and were taking selfies.

June turned her attention to the rolling blue waves of Lake Huron.  “Those little shits back there.  Absolutely inexcusable.”

“Mom, language.” Willow pleaded.

June Darby shook her head in disgust.  “Where were the parents?”

“Who knows?  Probably getting drunk somewhere.”

June stopped on the shoulder of the road.  Gravel crunched under the three tires until she stopped.  She planted both of her feet firmly on the ground. “Now you see why I chose this bike.  I would’ve fell had I been on two wheels when they cut me off.”

Willow did her best to hide her amusement. “I think the pedestrians on the sidewalk were just as upset after running for their lives, when they saw you come over the curb.”

“Not funny.”

June caught the smile on Willow’s face. She had purposefully turned away, adjusting the Detroit Tiger ball cap on her head.  “I know, Mom.”

“Really? You’re not hiding it very well.”

Willow looked down at her pedals. “Did you forget about the brakes?”

“I tried them.” June shot back.

Willow pointed to her handlebars. “The ones with the grips?”

She looked at her daughter with a blank, inquisitive stare. “Those?”

“Yeah.  The old school reverse pedal thing doesn’t work on these.  Didn’t you pay attention to the instructions before we left?”

“Of course I did.”  June sounded annoyed.  It was meant to conceal the fact that she hadn’t listened.
