The first thought that came into her head was that it might not be her father who was sending the messages. He could be under due arrest and have been tortured into giving them the code. She squeezed her eyes shut at the memory of her torture. It could be a trap and meeting the contact unarmed and without backup would be a serious mistake. But what else could she do? She’d been instructed to come alone. If she didn’t comply it would be unlikely that she’d get the information they needed.

“You got another one, agent Finely?” a voice asked, making her jump.

Liz turned to the agent and smiled tightly. “Yes. It says I’m going to be contacted again, at 1pm, Greek time.”

“Good,” he replied. “I’ll inform headquarters.”

She hated lying to her colleagues. Sweat formed on her top lip, and she quickly wiped it away. What she was doing was wrong. They wouldn’t understand. She knew there would be trouble when she got back to the UK, and how was she supposed to get to departures without the dogs following?

“Hart wants you to forward the email,” the agent said after taking on the phone.

“Right away,” she announced.

It would take West only a few minutes to decipher the message and then what? The agents would be told to follow her undetected. She couldn’t risk it. But what if headquarters called back to say they hadn’t received the message. How long would they wait? It was a chance she was willing to take. Her finger hovered over the send button. She then closed the lid of the laptop, sipped her drink wishing it was a whisky and Coke instead. She needed something to take the edge off.
