Many neurological disorders and conditions affect an individual’s functioning and
result in disabilities or limit activities and restrict participation. According to the
International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF), the medical
model views disability as a person’s problem, directly caused by disease, trauma, or
other health conditions that require medical care in the form of individual treatment.
Management of the disability is aimed at cure or the individual’s adjustment and
behavior change. The social model of disability sees the issue mainly as a socially
created problem and a matter related to individuals’ full integration into society.
rehabilitation
WHO defines rehabilitation as an active process by which those affected by injury
or disease achieve a full recovery or, if a full recovery is not possible, realize their
optimal physical, mental and social potential and are integrated into their most
appropriate environment. Rehabilitation is one of the critical components of the
primary healthcare strategy and the promotion, prevention, and treatment. While
advertising and prevention primarily target risk factors of disease and treatment
targets ill-health, rehabilitation targets human functioning. As with other key health
strategies, it is of varying importance and is relevant to all other medical specialties
and health professions.
