In American culture we can trace this sense of innate male superiority over females to Protestant fire brand John Knox. As a friend in Scotland put it, “he could stir crowds into a frenzy. … He was a bullying twat but a fantastic orator.”

In 1558 John Knox anonymously published his “First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women.” In his pamphlet he writes,

“Woman in her greatest perfection was made to serve and obey man, not to rule and command him.
After the fall, she was made subject to man by the irrevocable sentence of GOD. In which sentence there are two parts.

(a) A dolour, anguish and pain as oft as ever she shall be a mother.
(b) A subjection of her self, her appetites and will to her husband and his will.”

Knox goes on to explain that it is a combination of ignorance of God, personal ambitions, and tyranny itself that seeks to destroy the second part of God’s punishments against women for the Fall of Mankind.  His protests were directed at Marie de Medici, Mary of Guise, and Queen Mary Tudor.
