Affiliate marketing is a means by which a company promotes its product or service with the help of an outside party. Another company is rewarded for its efforts with a form of commission in return for promoting goods and/or services, and successfully securing a sale for the original company. Three parties are involved in the affiliate marketing process.
1.The Advertiser (or Merchant). This is the company selling the product or service. This party must be ready to pay another for promoting and selling.
2.The Marketer (or Marketer). The party that will actively promote the Advertiser’s product or service is known as either the Marketer or Publisher. The Advertiser will work with that person and provide text ads, banner, links, or whatever is needed to connect a consumer to the Advertiser’s transaction web page This is not a pro bono service at all. The Marketer has a right to expect some form of commission, ordinarily a dollar amount or percentage of the final sale, as compensation for services. The Advertiser will issue to an approved affiliate an ID for the purpose of recording and tracking commissions which are owed.
3.The Consumer. The one who responds to the call to action positioned on the Marketer’s web page. This individual will perform a transaction, or conversion, to purchase the Advertiser’s product or service.
Internet technology is at the core of the relationship between the Marketer and the Advertiser. It is critical a record is made of the number of Consumers contacting the Advertiser via the Marketer. This is done with the use of a cookie.
