The door opened and banged shut as Dane walked in. His dark hair, the same shade as Halie’s, was on the longer side and a disheveled mess. He tilted his lips upward when he met Paige’s gaze, then turned to the detective. “Hey, Lex,” he greeted him. “What are you and Craig doing here?”

Sometimes Paige forgot that Dane was a detective too. He’d been the one to bring Nolan in when he’d terrorized so many people, including Dane’s wife. It also boggled her mind that Dane was Nolan’s half-brother. It must hurt him a lot to realize he was related to such an evil man.

“I brought Ms. Morris’s new foster child here,” Detective Foster informed Dane. “Now that she’s settled, I need to go back to the station to make my reports.” He nodded at Paige. “Call me if you need anything or if Mila wants to talk. She hasn’t said a word since we found her. The social worker thinks it’ll be a while before she opens up.”

“I will,” she promised. That poor little girl.

Detective hottie nodded at Dane and then left the room. Paige stared at him as he went down her little walk and slid into the driver’s seat of the car. He glanced up and met her gaze. It was perhaps her imagination, but he seemed…interested in her. Maybe he was concerned about leaving Mila with her. She had to be projecting her own attraction on to him. She mentally shook that thought away and waved at him. He nodded his head and then returned his attention to his car. When he drove off, she turned her attention back to Dane. “Halie has been looking forward to this party for days.”
