Christopher Nolan has kept a tight lid on his next project, "Interstellar, " so far, but it looks like he has his sights set on Matthew McConaughey to star as the film"s lead.
According to Deadline, the offer is out to the actor, who will star as a character named Cooper. The film will revolve around "a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding" and will utilize Caltech physicist expert Kip Thorne"s theories regarding wormholes and time travel.
As McConaughey has been offered the lead, one would assume that his character will be at the center of this ambitious project, which has been touted as a hard sci-fi film. The role would be another coup for McConaughey, who is coming off of a monster year that saw him star in "Killer Joe, " "Magic Mike, " "Mud, " "Bernie, " and "The Paperboy."
Nolan"s brother Jonah actually hatched the idea behind "Interstellar" several years ago, and Paramount initially set it up as a vehicle for Steven Spielberg. Earlier this year, however, Chris came aboard to direct after polishing the script to accommodate his own original idea.
Since then, development has moved rather quickly: Warner Brothers joined Paramount as producers, and the film was slotted for a November 2014 release date.
This isn"t the only casting news to emerge from the Nolan camp lately, as collaborate Wally Pfister has been hard at work on a sci-fi film of his own in "Transcendence." His film is rumored to center on a scientist whose brain gets uploaded into a supercomputer.
Johnny Depp has been tagged as the film"s lead for a while now, but he"s since been joined by Paul Bettany and Rebecca Hall. Most recently, Kate Mara signed on in an unspecified role. Coincidentally, her sister Rooney was up for the role that eventually went to Hall.
The sci-fi genre has seen quite a resurgence in recent years, and hopefully that trend will continue upward with Nolan and Pfister hard at work on these projects.
