I am an English to Brazilian Portuguese translator with 3+ years of experience on which I work for a living exclusively of my translations. As is usual in this trade our everyday projects are not the most exciting in world (just as says Babelcube ad). For some time I was thinking about to translate some books of personal interest that are not published in Brazil (in some specific areas we have a great lag compared with developed markets), but normally publishing houses here - and probably elsewhere- have closed teams where isn't easy to ingress besides the fact editors and publishers have they specific worries with marketability, ROI (return over investiment), natural constraiments of the business etc.
In the last few months I have been thinking about a joint venture with someone who possess publishing rights. My idea was exactly what Babelcube is proposing: a translator taking part of the investment risk offering his work and time (me) + an author or someone who hold copyrights (probably you) + a publishing house (Babelcube). Something that always seemed pretty interesting for me is the royalties model instead of one unique payment. The perspective to be a partner or an shareholder of the project is very exciting. So was not without a surprise I "discovered" Babelcube by a Facebook ad.
I will make contact with authors whose books have a personal appeal to my specific universe.
As you may know the translation of a whole book with credits as the translator is a nice upgrade in our career and a substantial improvement on our portfolio.
