“What was that all about yesterday?” Kai is running next to me for our warming-up. We’re playing a friendly match against our local competitors. “With that Mila chick, I mean?”
I went to my room immediately last night and crawled into bed. Alone.
“She won’t leave my head,” I confess.
It’s true. Everywhere I go, run… even in my sleep, I see her blue eyes.
“So, it happened,” Kai smiles. “How is this possible?” My best friend nearly chokes me in his enthusiasm as he hugs me. “You’re in love, man.” I brush off his arms and shove him forward so that he’s running in front of me now.
It happened to me once before, and I vowed to protect myself from that sort of thing ever since. It was a couple of years ago. I was completely in love with Gina and she loved me back, or so I thought. It ended real fast, though, as soon as she found out where I lived and worked.
I couldn’t give her the future she had in mind. She was a law student and no matter how crazy she was about me, she was too afraid to introduce me to her parents. I couldn’t offer her a future anyway – not the one she wanted, at least. I told her I loved her so many times. I even dressed up in Kai’s outfits. I used his clothes in order to pretend I was good enough. I changed myself for her, but it didn’t matter.
“I’m not in love.”
Mila will bring me heartache all over again. We go stand with the others and continue our practice by running back and forth at top speed, following instructions until coach blows his whistle. We run forward and backward until he calls us together to discuss tactics.
